Task force considers changes to qualified immunity for Illinois law enforcement officers

A state task force continued discussions last week regarding possible changes to state law regarding qualified immunity for law enforcement officers. Courts have ruled that unless a plaintiff can prove an officer violated a “clearly established” right, qualified immunity can be used as a defense against civil liability.

Scholars seeking to end qualified immunity said reforms are necessary to ensure that all individuals who believe they’ve had their rights violated by police officers have the opportunity to seek justice in court. To read more, click here:
